A former game reserve, the Großer Tiergarten (‘animal garden') is home to many wild animals. So many, in fact, that the municipality has even mandated 35 urban hunters to fight against the proliferation of game. Located in the Berlin-Tiergarten district, this is the second largest park in the city.
Berliners like to come here for walks, picnics, bike tours, games of football, Sunday barbecues, or to sit at the lakeside café. Its 210 hectares contain rolling lawns, small ponds, undergrowth, large avenues, and monuments, such as the Bellevue Palace and the Reichstag. In the southeast, near Potsdamer Platz, is a large playground for children and, in winter, you can skate on the frozen ponds.
