Paris honors designer Martin Margiela with two must-see exhibitions

Calling all fashionistas! Paris is getting ready to honor Martin Margiela, one of the most eccentric and mysterious fashion designers of his generation with two must-see exhibitions.

After showcasing Yves Saint-Laurent last year, this spring Paris will be firmly focused on Martin Margiela. From March 22, fashion-lovers will be able to get an inside look at the collaboration between the designer and Hermès between 1997 and 2003 at the Margiela: The Hermès Years retrospective held at the Musées des Arts Décoratifs. Margiela, once an assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier, is an honorary member of the Antwerp Six and the only Belgian designer of his generation to have founded his own house in Paris. With deconstructed and reassembled cuts, futuristic and recycled materials, monochrome fabrics, a subversive aesthetic, logo-less pieces and extraordinary interior designs, the Maison Martin Margiela universe was like no other.

Held at the splendid Palais Galliera, the Margiela-Galliera, 1989–2009 exhibition follows the fashion designer's career from his first spring-summer collection in 1989 through to 2009, with a focus on his conceptual approach to design. The exhibition includes more than 130 looks, runway videos, archives and special installations to offer a unique perspective on one of the fashion world's most influential contemporary designers. Among the pieces on show, visitors can admire items from his ‘Oversize', ‘Barbie Collection' and ‘Replica' collections, inspired by vintage clothing from around the world. Especially for the occasion, the former palace of the Duchess of Galliera will be putting on an exclusive display of several rare pieces from its priceless costume collection.
