Bangkok following the stars of the Michelin Guide

The Michelin Red Guide, that famous French guide to fine dining, has just unveiled its first publication dedicated to the Bangkok restaurant scene. Close your eyes and let it guide.

Bangkok following the stars of the Michelin Guide

Last year, Bangkok took the title as the most visited city on the planet! A magnet for visitors from around the world, it knows how to attract and develop a cosmopolitan cuisine recognized as one of the best, while still holding on to its ancient cultural heritage. Michelin inspectors discovered an incredibly vibrant culinary scene when they went to visit.

Only three restaurants were awarded two stars. If you like Indian food, make a bee-line to Gaggan, where chef Gaggan Anand invents original dishes using the perfect balance of textures and spices. The two other star acts, Le Normandie and Mezzaluna, serve top-class French and European cuisine respectively, with such delicacies as Ossetra caviar, sea urchin and potato or Lozère lamb, eggplant and black garlic.

Bangkok following the stars of the Michelin Guide

Seven starred Thai restaurants

Seven restaurants were awarded one star and one of them was Nahm. This sophisticated eatery at the COMO Metropolitan Bangkok hotel invites gourmets to a setting where contemporary style sits side by side with Ayutthaya-inspired pieces. You must book ahead if you want to stand any chance of devouring its delicious specialties with their perfect blend of sweet, sour and savory sensations. It is now part of the elite club of the best restaurants in Asia.
Another must-visit restaurant is Chim by Siam Wisdom where local chef Chumpol Jangprai works his magic. He takes traditional recipes from his homeland, such as Poo Nim Tod (soft-shell crab) and puts his own take on them, striking the perfect balance between tradition and modernity.

Next stop on this fine-dining itinerary will take you to Saneh Jaan, near to Lumpini Park. The place owes its reputation to classic dishes, such as crispy sweet-and-sour noodles served with grilled shrimp, but also to more unusual creations, such as kaeng ranjouan, a hot spicy soup.
For something more experimental, head straight to Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, rewarded for the originality of its dishes.

Great places, great prices

Are you on a tight budget? Pop into one of the 35 restaurants in Bangkok with the Bib Gourmand designation, an award for quality food at low price.
From the street food of Baan Yai Phad Thai, specializing in Pad Thai, to Guay Tiew Kua Gai Suanmali, a long-established stir-fried noodle bar, and not forgetting Jay Oh and its seafood delights, all these places serve a quality menu for a top price of 1,000 Baht (THB), only 25 euro.

Street food is everywhere you look in working-class districts; offering an incredible variety of dishes, which is part and parcel of the charm of Bangkok.

One place in particular stands out from the rest and that is Jay Fai. Wearing her signature ski goggles, this legendary cook is dedicated to her woks. Continuing the business started by her father 70 years before, she prepares omelets and huge crab curries before your very eyes. Since her modest establishment won a Michelin star, she's been overwhelmed with success, but will still be delighted to see you.
